RECREATIONAL RULES
PART 107 COMMERCIAL
STUDY GUIDE

RECREATIONAL FLYER RULES

1. The TRUST Exam

All recreational flyers must pass The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST). It is free, taken online, and you must carry proof of passage while flying.

2. Registration & Marking

If your drone weighs more than 250g (0.55 lbs), you must register it with the FAA and mark the registration number on the outside of the drone.

3. Airspace & Altitude

  • Fly strictly for recreational purposes (no payment or compensation).
  • Keep your drone within your Visual Line of Sight (VLOS).
  • Do not fly higher than 400 feet in uncontrolled (Class G) airspace.

PART 107 COMMERCIAL RULES

1. Remote Pilot Certificate

You must hold a valid Remote Pilot Certificate (Part 107 license) issued by the FAA to fly for any commercial purpose (real estate, YouTube monetization, inspections).

2. Operating Limitations

  • Maximum altitude is 400 feet Above Ground Level (AGL), or within a 400ft radius of a structure if flying higher.
  • Maximum ground speed is 100 mph (87 knots).
  • Minimum weather visibility is 3 miles from the control station.

PART 107 STUDY GUIDE

SECTION A: Airspace Classification

Airspace is heavily tested. Know the alphabet:

  • Class A: 18,000 ft and up. Drones don't fly here.
  • Class B, C, D: Controlled airspace around airports. You MUST have ATC authorization.
Tactical Tip: If flying near March Air Reserve Base in Moreno Valley, you are dealing with Class C Airspace. Check LAANC!
  • Class G: Uncontrolled airspace. Free to fly up to 400ft AGL without authorization.

SECTION B: Weather (METAR & TAF)

  • METAR: Current weather conditions (Routine).
  • TAF: Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (Predicted weather).
  • Decoding: "BR" means Mist (Baby Rain). "RA" means Rain. "DZ" means Drizzle.

SECTION C: Drone Performance

  • Higher weight = Higher stall speed, shorter battery life.
  • Center of Gravity (CG): If too far aft (back), the drone is highly unstable.
  • Density Altitude: High heat, humidity, and elevation lead to "high density altitude" (thin air). Propellers work harder.
